The National Movement for Social Justice has stressed the need to rectify wrongs and punish the corrupt.
Its secretary Sunil Jayasekara, in a statement, called for the prompt enforcement of the law against the sugar import levy fraud.
He welcomed the government move, at least belatedly, to lift the burden from consumers and prevent a few from profiting from the sudden increase in the tax.
The statement also raised the still unaddressed Rs. 16 billion fraud that occurred when the tax was reduced previously.
It is clear that similar frauds have taken place in the import of medicines and essential commodities, it said.
