Courts have ordered two mass grave investigations into the next step following hearings in Mannar yesterday (16).

Thereafter, S. Niranjan, a lawyer who represents victims of enforced disappearances in both cases, gave details to the media.

He said that samples from 82 human remains from the Tirukethiswaran gravesite were ordered to be sent to Beta Analytics in Miami, USA for carbon-testing.

A JMO report due into the body parts first found in December 2013 will now be submitted at the next hearing.

Also, skeletal remains unearthed from the grave at the Mannar CWE premises will be stored suitably for forensic testing, said Niranjan.

That was after courts were told the facilities at their present location were inadequate.

The site was found by chance in 2018 and subsequent excavations saw the exhumation of body parts belonging to 376 persons, including 28 children.
