The SLPP has informed the president that democracy could be strengthened even without devolving powers to the provinces.

At this moment, people do not expect the president to devolve powers, said its general secretary Sagara Kariyawasam at a media briefing on 14 August.

"They want him to stabilize the economy, and thereby strengthen democracy," he said.

However, Karaiyawasam did not elaborate on how that could be done.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe, in a speech to parliament five days earlier, advised the SLPP to take a decision on power devolution in consultation with ex-president Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Kariyawasam, speaking further to the media, said the president should not be taking up such topics at a time when the country was in a state of insolvency.
