Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa has asked state officials not to be any party to sound the death knell of democracy by supporting ‘palace conspiracies’ against holding the presidential polls.

He asked them, especially the Election Commission, to take all steps in the name of democracy to hold a free and fair election mandated by the constitution.

The SJB and the alliance led by it are prepared to rally the people and all forces to safeguard democracy, he said in Batticaloa.

He accused the president and the ‘slaves and stooges’ representing his government of plotting to create an opinion that holding the election is inappropriate.

The people should be given the opportunity to elect their president, he added.
