Dr. Sarath Amunugama, a former minister, has tendered his resignation as chairman of the Mawbima Janatha Party (MJP) led by Dilith Jayaweera.

The resignation letter, sent to Jayaweera, gives no reason for the decision.

Dr. Amunugama, in the letter, wishes Jayaweera well in his politics.

He was a notable absentee at the recent formation of an alliance, Sarvajana Balaya.

His daughter, Waruni Amunugama, attended.

According to political sources, Dr. Amunugama has been against the MJP’s allying with Wimal Weerawansa, Udaya Gammanpila and Channa Jayasumana.
