The government has green-lighted the resumption of excavations at the Kokkutuduvai mass grave in Mullaitivu by approving a curtailed expenditure.

The Mullaitivu district secretariat has informed courts the justice ministry would provide Rs. 9.7 million, down from an estimated Rs. 13.7 million, to carryout further excavations.

Accordingly, Mullaitivu magistrate D. Pratheepan has ordered the next hearing into the case be held at the gravesite on 04 July.

A total of 40 skeletal remains said to be of LTTE members were recovered at Kokkutuduvai during excavations between September and November 2023.

The site was first found by water supply workers digging the area to lay pipelines in June 2023.
