A group of Buddhist monks is planning to launch a protest campaign within days by alleging undue interference and pressure by the Catholic church over the issue of the police chief, reliable sources say.
Taking up nine FR petitions, including one by Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, the Supreme Court issued an injunction to Deshabandu Tennnakoon against his functioning as the IGP.
Buddhists are being provoked by the Catholic church and Catholic lawyers who even suggest qualifications for the new police chief, it is alleged.
In the meantime, a social media campaign is on to create an opinion that it is inappropriate to remove Tennakoon from his position, as a drive led by him against drugs and the underworld is in progress.
It is said that such claims are an insult to the judiciary and punishable by the law.
