The United National Party (UNP) will hold a special convention today (21) mainly to introduce a new constitution for the party.
Its leader, president Ranil Wickremesinghe will lead the event at Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium in Colombo.
UNP chairman Wajira Abeywardena said the event would be crucial for the entire country.
The president will deliver an important message to the nation following his recent visit to China, as he works with international support to revive the country from bankruptcy, he said.
Abeywardena went onto say that the path has been cleared to unite all communities and to make Sri Lanka a powerful nation in Asia.
The new UNP constitution will aim to obtain support of the entire country to go on that path with new technology and win economic freedom, he said.
General secretary Palitha Range Bandara said invitees include professionals and organizations that approve of a new UNP constitution.
Main organizer of the convention is minister Harin Fernando.
According to sources at Sirikotha, no changes will be made on the occasion to party positions.
