A suspect in a shooting incident has been killed in an exchange of fire with the police while in hiding at a house at Gonawala in Sapugaskanda in the early hours of this morning (16), police said.

The man, identified as Ramiah Jeyaraj, was wanted in connection with a firing of several shots at the home of a wealthy businessman at Polpithimukalana in Ragama 11 days ago.

Injured in the exchange of fire with the police, he was admitted to Kiribathgoda Hospital, where died later.

Meanwhile, a murder suspect died after he sustained injuries in a grapple with policemen as he was being taken for an investigation yesterday.

According to police spokesman Nihal Talduwa, the man was a suspect in a killing at Thalduwa in Avissawella.

He was being taken to Maniyangama, Avissawella, when he had tried to strangle a policeman with his handcuffs.

In the ensuing struggle, he was injured, and died at Avissawella Hospital, said the police spokesman.

Countering criticism of suspects being taken for investigations during nighttime, he said the police had the power to do so at any time of the day.
