An estate company is attempting to take over a land in Avissawella allotted by the good governance regime to build houses for estate workers, according to the leader of the Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPF) Mano Ganesan.

He said a four-acre plot was given after housing lines of Penrith Estate were destroyed following a gas tank explosion.

Ganesan accused Damro Company of making use of the political change to take over the land.

Estate workers have informed him the company had erected a fence around the land, where backhoes had then prepared the land for rubber cultivation.

Ganesan met the divisional secretary of Avissawella and questioned him over his failure to keep the land secure for the workers.

He said the housing project had been abandoned after the government change, although funds had also been set aside.

The TPF leader promised to raise the matter at the Colombo district development committee meeting and ensure the resumption of the housing project.
