Director general of health services Dr. Asela Gunawardena has alleged attempts to link every death to a medicine or a vaccine to undermine the free health service.

As persons who received free education too, the country’s health service should be protected, he told the media yesterday (20).

Dr. Gunawardena said there was no need to hide the truth with regard to the health service.

He explained in detail the actual situation with regard to a reported shortage of an anesthetic drug at Nagoda Hospital, the death of a patient at Kegalle Hospital and a media report on malnutrition among children and mothers.

He assured that no substandard medicines were being imported and that every decision was taken to ensure the safety of patients.

Also speaking here, additional secretary to the Health Ministry, Dr. Saman Ratnayake rejected claims that medicines being imported under an Indian credit line were substandard.
