President Ranil Wickrmesinghe and public security minister Tiran Alles meet this afternoon (09) to finalize a decision on the post of police chief that remains vacant for 14 days now, said a spokesman for the Presidential Secretariat.
C.D. Wickramaratne, who was given three more months as the IGP on the verge of his retirement, completed the extended term on June 25.
At an earlier discussion, Alles pointed out to the president that appointing an officer junior to the three most senior DIGs to the position even temporarily could create trouble.
The president asked the minister to recommend if Wickramaratne should be given another service extension or an IGP be appointed temporarily.
Wickramaratne and Alles too, had lengthy talks on the matter at a meeting last Thursday, said police sources.
