The Army has planted Bo trees and placed a Buddha statue to start a temple in the secluded Kachchativu islet, MP Charles Nimalanathan has revealed in parliament.

Since then, photojournalist Kumanan Kana has posted pictures of the place.

The 285-acre islet has St. Anthony’s Church as the only building where an annual feast is attended by Catholics from Sri Lanka and India.

Kachchativu was ceded to Sri Lanka in the 1970s, but there are calls in India for its takeover.

Aggravating the dispute, there have been increased arrests of Indian fishermen by the Sri Lanka Navy in this sea area.
