The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) will refrain from going to the public with its candidate until the presidential polls are announced, said its founder Basil Rajapaksa.

He has told incumbent Ranil Wickremesinghe that national organizer Namal Rajapaksa is strongly opposed to supporting him.

The two had a meeting at the president’s Paget Road residence.

Before that meeting, Namal declared that the remaining supporters would leave the SLPP if they declare support for Wickremesinghe.

His father Mahinda is against his contesting the election with the knowledge that they will face certain defeat.

In light of this situation, party seniors have told Namal that they should not field a candidate.
