The tremors now being felt in Wellawaya are caused by a splitting of the Indo-Australian tectonic plate in two, said professor of geology Athula Senaratne of the University of Peradeniya.
Minor tremors are the result of Sri Lanka’s close proximity of around 1,000 miles to the location of the split which has been taking place more rapidly for around 20 years, he said.
Prof. Senaratne asked the public not to get alarmed, but said the country could expect a continuation of minor tremors.
Wellawaya recorded yet another tremor measured 2.3 magnitude on the Richter scale around 3.48 am today (11).
Its epicenter was located to the east of Wellawaya town, said the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau.
The area experienced two tremors of 3 and 2.4 magnitudes on the Richter scale yesterday with the epicenter locating around the area of Pelwatte sugar company.
