There is no plan to inform parliament about not having funds to hold the local government polls, said state minister of finance Ranjith Siyambalapitiya.
He refuted weekend newspaper reports in this regard when he addressed journalists in Ruwanwella yesterday (05).
Meanwhile, the Election Commission has sought Rs. 770 million as this month’s expenses for holding the LG polls.
Its chairman Nimal Punchihewa requested in writing from the finance ministry secretary to make the money available in full or in instalments.
Previously, it received Rs. 37 million, out of a total expenditure of Rs. four million estimated until the day of the election.
Meanwhile, a senior spokesman for the government said the Treasury was not having adequate funds to release for the LG polls owing to the financial crisis.
Election commissioner general Saman Sri Ratnayake has told News1st that he believed the finance ministry would abide by its undertaking to fund the election which was a constitutional responsibility.
