The main suspect in a racket to smuggle people to Dubai and Oman was arrested at the Katunayake airport yesterday night (18).

The 44-year-old from Wattala was nabbed at the airport’s immigration office as he returned from Dubai.

According to the Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE), the man operated his racket from an office in Maradana.

Handed over to Katunayake police, he was due to be produced before the Negombo magistrate’s court.

Embassy official accused of harassing, selling housemaids

Meanwhile, a third secretary at the Sri Lankan embassy in Oman continues in his position despite being accused of sexually harassing women and selling them for slavery and prostitution.

Although he was reportedly suspended, the relevant documents are yet to reach the authorities, lankasara.com reports.

He is to be brought home, at his own expense, for an inquiry, said the SLBFE.

The officer was ordered to be suspended following an inquiry led by a SSP of the CID into complaints received against him.

His victims number around 45 Sri Lankan women sent on tourist visas to Oman as housemaids.

The embassy there is yet to act to get 43 of the women repatriated.

CID investigations have revealed that certain officials of the SLBFE and Immigration and Emigration Department were aiding in the racket.
