Estate owners have agreed to raise the festival advance for workers to Rs. 15,000 in view of the prevailing economic difficulties, said the deputy leader of the Ceylon Workers’ Congress Bharath Arulsamy.

The payment made so far will be tripled for Deepavali on a recommendation by the CWC, he has claimed to the media.

Arulsamy said most estate companies have agreed to the increase, and warned that any company failing to comply will have to suffer serious consequences.

Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa too, has called for an increase in the festival advance for estate workers, noting that a Rs. 5,000 payment was wholly inadequate.
