Former president and the leader of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Maithripala Sirisena says that an interim all-party government is the only solution for resolving the multiple crises facing the country today.
Sirisena further said that an Interim All Party Government should be formed to seek international assistance at this juncture as it is difficult to find quick solutions to the current crisis.
Addressing a press conference held at the SLFP Headquarters yesterday (17), he said that an interim all-party government should be formed to seek assistance from the international community, adding that many countries including Japan and the United States would be willing to support Sri Lanka in such a situation.
Despite having several discussions with president Rajapaksa on the importance of forming an all-party government, the President hadn't responded favorably to the request, he said.
He pointed out that there was a lack of coordination between the president and the prime minister. "You see the president and the prime minister summoning the same ministers and officials for discussions and issuing instructions to them on separate occasions. Clearly, there is no real partnership between them."
Adding that no single government would be able to resolve the current crisis, the former president said that an interim all-party government must be formed with only 15 ministerial portfolios representing all political parties.
He further said that the duration of the interim all-party government should be agreed upon and thereafter decide on the time frame for holding an election.
