Veteran rugby official Dilroy Fernando has been appointed as the new Match Official Manager by Asia Rugby.


At a time when Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) administration is in the doldrums, Asia Rugby’s recognition of Fernando’s services is a silver lining.

The former Isipathana CR and fC and Sri Lanka rugby star has over 20 years of extensive experience in match officiating, coaching, and performance reviewing, bringing a wealth of expertise and a proven track record to this pivotal role.

“In his new capacity, Dilroy will oversee the logistics of match official operations, maintain comprehensive databases of officials, coaches, and performance reviewers, and ensure strict adherence to budgetary guidelines. He will manage the nominations and appointments process, support performance reviews, and serve as a crucial liaison with team coaches and management on refereeing and law matters. Additionally, he will play a significant role in developing male and female match officials and coaches by organising online courses and discussions to promote continuous improvement in line with Asia Rugby’s principles and values,” the regional body stated.

Fernando has been an integral part of Asia Rugby competitions, having served as a referee, coach of match officials, and performance reviewer. His international experience includes delivering World Rugby accredited courses in over 20 countries, underscoring his dedication to the sport globally.

His extensive experience will be invaluable in identifying and nurturing talent, ensuring effective communication and collaboration with unions and stakeholders, and supporting the growth and development of match officials across the region.

He has held several honorary positions such as President of the Sri Lanka Society of Rugby Football Referees, Chairman of Rugby at Isipathana College, and Chairman of Rugby at the CR and FC.

His leadership and organisational skills have been instrumental in the success of numerous international tournaments, including the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, and various Rugby Asiad tournament
