The Academy of Health Professionals (AHP) has urged the Election Commission (EC) to allow health workers who are not registered for postal voting to vote near their place of duty or to be provided with another convenient method to cast their vote.

In a letter addressed to the EC Chairperson R.M.A.L. Rathnayake, the AHP highlighted the challenges faced by healthcare workers, particularly those engaged in essential services, on Election day.

They claimed that as many health workers are required to visit their respective constituencies to cast their votes, there could be potential disruptions to essential healthcare services.

When contacted by The Daily Morning yesterday (12), AHP President Ravi Kumudesh emphasised the importance of safeguarding both the public’s right to health and the healthcare workers' right to vote.

"It is imperative that the healthcare workforce, which is at the forefront of providing essential services, is not forced to choose between their professional obligations and their civic duty," Kumudesh stated.

Kumudesh further elaborated that certain Election related arrangements could lead to significant strain on the healthcare system, especially in critical areas such as emergency services, where any reduction in the staff availability could have serious consequences.

In the event extending postal voting (application process since concluded) opportunities to all healthcare staff is not feasible, the AHP has proposed that alternative arrangements be made.

"At the very least, healthcare workers should be allowed to vote near their place of duty or be provided with another convenient method," he suggested.

Rathnayake was not available for comment.
