Rs. 200 million of public money will have to be borne as the presidential election expenses for each candidate added to the list, said election commissioner general Saman Sri Ratnayake.

Speaking to journalists in Colombo yesterday (09), he explained how the expenditure goes up with increasing number of candidates.

He noted that except for the two main candidates, all others polled less than five percent of the votes at the last presidential election.

This election is for a single position and candidates should think about the cost if they truly love the country, said Ratnayake.

At present, a total of 24 candidates are in the fray.
