A group of Tamil journalists from the north was denied the opportunity to handover a letter to president Ranil Wickremesinghe that calls for justice for their slain colleagues.

They were among the invitees to a meeting for regional correspondents with the president at Water’s Edge on 06 August.

Most Tamil journalists boycotted it in a show of protest against the murder of journalists, restrictions to media freedom and other forms of repression.

They are also unhappy over restrictions imposed on to them against reporting the president’s recent visits to the north.

However, a group attended the meeting at the invitation of the ministry of labour and foreign employment.

However, they were prevented by the president’s security division personnel from handing over their letter to Wickremesinghe.

However, several Sinhala journalists were allowed to express their views and also meet with the president.

The letter by the Tamil journalists calls for an accountability mechanism to ensure justice for slain and missing journalists.
