The URF will announce on 10 August its decision with regard to the presidential polls, said a party spokesman.

The party’s central committee and the national council are due to meet on that day.

It will be decided if the party should field its own candidate, or support a mainstream candidate.

Its leader Patali Champika Ranawaka had talks with president Ranil Wickremesinghe on 06 August.

He also met opposition leader Sajith Premadasa and the leaders of several other parties.

According to party sources, seven of the 10 politburo members want the URF to support Premadasa by allying with his Samagi Jana Sandanaya.

However, member Shiral Lakthilake vehemently opposes it.

The URF’s central committee has 85 members and the national council has 108 members.
