The National Movement for Social Justice (NMSJ) yesterday (29) called for an immediate resolution to the discord surrounding the position of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), which has emerged from discrepancies among the Legislature, Executive, and Judiciary.
We advocate for the Constitutional Council (CC), chaired by the Speaker, and the National Police Commission (NPC) to convene and deliberate on this matter, providing appropriate recommendations” former Speaker, Chairman of National Movement for Social Justice, Karu Jayasuriya issuing a statement said.
“We have also observed that, despite the enforcement of the 21st Amendment to the Constitution, a vacancy remains on the CC. This lapse is deeply concerning, and it is perplexing that such a crucial appointment remains unfilled. Given the contradictions arising from past decisions of the CC, we firmly believe that this appointment should be made without further delay.
The NMSJ also implores all relevant authorities to enforce existing laws with utmost rigor to ensure a free and fair election. It is vital that all parties collaborate to avoid any recurrence of the controversies that recently plagued with regard to the Presidential Election, both within and beyond the halls of Parliament. With the Presidential Election officially announced and the dates duly gazetted, the adherence to this Constitutional obligation is paramount. We urge all political parties and institutions to approach this opportunity with fairness and justice, for the future well-being of our nation,” the statement further said.
