Samples have been collected from skeletal remains found from a mass grave in Mullaitivu for tests to determine if they belong to persons of enforced disappearances.

Teeth removed from the freshly dug skulls at the site at Kokkutuduvai will be sent for DNA testing, Mullaitivu JMO Kanagasabapathi Vasudeva told journalists yesterday (12).

DNA testing could be done on a court order if relatives of missing persons request so, forensic archaeologist Prof. Raj Somadeva said on the previous day.

Excavations so far have unearthed skeletal remains belonging to 45 persons.

A 35-page interim report submitted by Prof. Somadeva to courts in Mullaitivu said the bodies had been buried following a firefight during 1994-1996.

Two officials from the United Nations and the United States observed the excavation work yesterday.
