Finance State Minister Dr. Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said an expedited programme will be carried out during the weekend to release more than 5,000 containers piled up due to the Customs strike.

The minister also said that accordingly, the existing congestion will be reduced by next Monday.

Minister Siyambalapitiya made these comments while participating in the resumption of the construction of the indoor stadium at the Ruwanwella Rajasinghe College.

The President has given around Rs.200 million for this project from money allocated for special projects.

Although the initial construction work of this stadium commenced in 2018, it was stopped due to lack of funds.

Later, with the intervention of the Minister Siyambalapitiya, the work was restarted in 2019 and stopped midway due to the subsequent covid pandemic.

Accordingly, the work of the project was restarted and it is expected to complete the work of this project very soon.

The state minister further commented as follows: “It is to be expected that trade union actions will become more common now that an election is about to take place.

Majority of trade unions are associated with a political movement. The trade unions should make decisions taking into consideration their profession first, the organization second and the country’s situation third. Strikes are not the first course of action a union should take, but the last course of action,” he said.
