Almost 70 per cent of the recommendations given by the Human Rights Commission to state institutions and officials get ignored, said its director Dr. Gihan Gunatilake.

Only 30 pc of the recommendations are implemented after the commission forwards them after investigating the complaints it receives, he said.

Gunatilake said the commission act of 1996 has seen no amendments for the past 30 years to make things difficult for their duties.

Steps are being taken to obtain more powers in line with the women empowerment commission established in May getting powers to file court action against the non-implementation of its recommendations, he said.

That will be done through a request to the president, he said.

In 2022, the commission made 89 recommendations, but only 28 were implemented, with the figures for 2023 standing respectively at 72 and 15 pc.

This year, just one out of 17 recommendations got implemented, aruna.lk quoted him as saying.
