Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa has accused the government of having written off huge amounts of borrowings obtained by its cronies and received various gratifications in return.

He said that he raised the matter in parliament and even demanded the finance minister to reveal the identities of the loan defaulters.

However, that was refused, saying they are confidential matters, said Premadasa after handing over a smart classroom to S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike School in Kurunegala yesterday (15).

At the same time, the government is placing unbearable burdens on the masses by way of innumerable taxes, noted Premadasa.

The International Monetray Fund has instructed the government to impose new taxes in order for meeting the state’s revenue targets, said the opposition leader.

He urged that instead of introducing new taxes, what should be done is to make tax collection more efficient.
