Police said that the Assistant Superintendent of Police, (ASP) accused of staging a shooting at a car in which popular actor and Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna MP Uddika Premaratne was traveling, has gone abroad.
It is revealed that the ASP has gone to Malaysia and an investigation is being conducted into charges of traveling abroad without proper permission of the police and the improper handing over the duty firearm to the police.
Police Media Spokesperson DIG Nihal Talduwa said accordingly the IGP will take legal action against him in the future.
On September 17, 2023, a group of unidentified gunmen had opened fire at MP Premaratne’s car when he returned home in Anuradhapura, at around 10:35 p.m.
The MP had managed to escape unharmed.
Later the MP Premaratne resigned from Parliament, and was reported to have gone to Canada.
