Former Parliamentarian Sagala Ratnayake urged the Government led by newly elected President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to have a firm stance concerning how it wants to deal with the debt restructuring process and Sri Lanka’s agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Speaking to the media yesterday (20), he said that former President Ranil Wickremesinghe had dealt with the debt restructuring process to a significant extent, and had reached consensus with the relevant parties.

Noting that entering into formal agreements is yet to be concluded and that the new Government should look into it, he added that the Wickremesinghe-led Government  had created a suitable environment for that, including by holding talks with lenders, and initiating the necessary policy reforms.

“The Government is saying that it will continue Wickremesinghe’s stance (concerning the agreement with the IMF). But, it is also asking for two-thirds majority power in the Parliament to go ahead with it. It does not need such power,” he said.

Ratnayake added that no government should receive two-thirds majority power in the Parliament, as it could be detrimental to the country.
