Tamils have been refused a return of their private land where the security forces headquarters in the Wanni is located.

On 27 March, they went there to meet Army commander Lt. Gen. Vikum Liyanage, but could not meet him as promised.

Other officers told them that the land cannot be released to them.

They have turned down an offer for alternative land.

Coming to know the Army chief was visiting the area, landowners planned a protest which was halted after five of them were promised a meeting with him.

However, he had left around 5.00 pm and nearly three hours later, top officials at the headquarters met them and stressed the need for the headquarters to remain there.

According to correspondents, around 170 acres belonging to 62 families have been acquired for the facility.
