Having a taxpayer identification number (TIN) will be made compulsory for registration or transfer of vehicle ownership, said motor traffic commissioner general Nishantha Anuruddha Weerasinghe.
That will come into force From February, he said, advising the public to have a TIN before visiting the department for either purpose.
More than one million persons have so far been registered with a TIN, said the Inland Revenue Department.
Having a TIN does not mean one should pay taxes, with the taxpaying threshold being set at an annual income of more than Rs. 1.2 million.
