The X-Press Pearl maritime disaster has caused the extinction of a number of ornamental fish species endemic to Sri Lankan seas, a sectoral oversight committee has been told.
Head of the committee on natural resources and sustainable development Ajith Mannapperuma said the toxic chemicals of the ship has also adversely affected the variety of hue of the fish.
A committee recommendation to the housing and urban development ministry to seek cabinet approval for further investigations into the matter has met with agreement.
