Excavations at the Kokkutuduvai mass grave in Mullaitivu have been suspended for three months after it transpired that the site spreads across the main road that leads to Kokilai.

With the work halted yesterday (29), forensic archaeologist Prof. Raj Somadeva is to submit an interim report of findings to courts on 31 December.

JMO at the district hospital Kanagasabapathy Vasudeva told the media that excavations would resume on 01 March 2024.

The magistrate has ordered the district secretary to appoint an officer to plan and facilitate the exhumations.

Skeletal remains belonging to at least 40 persons, believed to be those of female LTTE members, have been dug up at the site during a total of 20 days of work.

Water supply workers digging to lay pipelines stumbled on the skeletal remains on 29 June.
