Former speaker Karu Jayasekara has extended his gratitude to all MPs for having adopted the anti-corruption act by calling it as a most important achievement in recent times.

In a statement, he especially mentioned the president for his advice for the bill’s passage and justice minister Wijayadasa Rajapaksa for his persistent efforts.

The chairman of the National Movement for a Just Society said in a statement the new act was essential to eliminate corruption, although it could not be a complete one.

Its mere passage does not suffice and the government has a responsibility to make a crucial intervention towards its implementation, he said.

Jayasuriya stressed the need for the fast-tracking of an anti-corruption commission that should be efficient, independent and free of petty politics.

Under the purview of this commission, police and the Customs should act impartially, he said, adding that the relevant court cases too, need to be expedited.
