The government has been accused by the Centre for Environment and Nature Studies (CENS) of causing massive environmental destruction through its national physical plan 2011-2048.
Deforestation, mining for minerals, plans to sell water, urban development etc. are all part of this harm to the environment, said its coordinator Ravindra Kariyawasam at a media briefing on 17 July.
According to him, forest destruction is taking place at a rate of 75 acres a day.
The national physical plan proposes the setting up of six metropolitan zones, 19 airports, 44 ports which would all lead to massive environmental damage, he said.
