Fishermen of the north urge their political leaders to encourage president Ranil Wickremesinghe to take up Indian poaching and find a solution during his upcoming visit to India.

Deputy president of the Jaffna district fishermen’s cooperative society unions federation Anthonipillai Ratnakumar said fisheries minister Douglas Devananda and the MPs of Jaffna should raise the matter with the president.

Speaking to the media, Neduntivu fisheries association chief Francis Cruz said Indian poachers in their trawlers have damaged nets and other fishing equipment of local fishermen worth around Rs. 2,000 million.

Around 250 complaints made so far to government authorities failed to yield any solution, he said.

The fisheries minister too, is part of the presidential team that meets Indian premier Narendra Modi during the tour.
