Freedom People's Congress (FPC) MP Dullas Alahapperuma has alleged a plan by the president to take over all media through the proposed broadcasting authority act.

The former media minister told Neth FM Unlimited last night (07) that leaders would gain excessive powers through the proposed law.

Regulation of the media should be free from politics, he stressed.

Meanwhile, justice minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe said no final decision has been taken with regard to a proposal to set up a broadcasting authority commission.

A consultation will take place with the media in connection with the proposed act, he said.

He said a ministerial subcommittee headed by him has been tasked with formulating a mechanism to regulate the issuance of licenses to electronic media institutions.

Its other members are Bandula Gunawardena, Nimal Siripala de Silva, Keheliya Rambukwell and Manusha Nanayakkara.
