MP Gajendra Kumar Ponnambalam has been arrested in connection with his recent altercation with the police in Jaffna.
He was taken at his Colombo 03 home by a team from Jayapuram police around 6.30 am today (07).
Earlier, courts imposed a foreign travel ban on the TNPF leader.
Police spokesman Nihal Talduwa said Ponnambalam had been asked to give a statement to the police regarding the incident at Marudankerni public stadium a few days ago.
The MP said a team from Kollupitiya police tried to hand him over a document written in Sinhala, but that he refused to accept it since he could not write or read the language.
Meanwhile, the TNPF’s East Vadamarachchi organizer Jegadiswari Sadgunadevi, aka Arulmathi, has also been taken into custody on a charge of obstructing police duties.
Several more arrests will be made on the same charge, said SSP Talduwa.
