Stand up comedian Jayani Natasha Edirisooriya, who is accused of insulting Buddhism in a show called "Modabhimana", was arrested when she arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport to leave for Singapore.

The Police Media Division says that a group of officers from the Colombo Computer Crime Investigation Division (CCID) has arrested the woman.

The 31-year-old Edirisooriya was arrested at the BIA departure terminal at around 01.20 this morning at the Immigration and Emigration premises.

At present, she has been taken to the CCID in Narahenpita, Colombo for further investigations.

Two complaints have been lodged against Edirisuriya for disrespecting the Buddhist philosophy and culture.

Jamuni Thushara, president of the Citizens' Organization Against Bribery, Corruption and Waste, has lodged a complaint with the Criminal Investigations Department while Ven. Balangoda Kasyapa Thero had submitted a complaint to the police headquarters.

Before her arrest, Edirisooriya had publicly apologized for the controversial statement she had made in a video online.
