A Tamil mother of ten who died during a hunger-strike to demand a ceasefire between Indian peacekeepers and the LTTE in 1988 has been remembered in the north and the east.
Events to the memory of Poopathi Kanapathipillai, aka Poopathi Amma, took place on April 19 in Jaffna, Vavuniya, Mullaitivu, Kilinochchi, Mannar and Batticaloa.
They comprised garlanding and paying of tributes to her and a vehicle procession.
Poopathi Amma launched the fasting on March 19, 1988 and died on the 32nd day with a demand for the withdrawal of the IPKF.
In the previous two years, remembrance events for her were prevented with warnings of punishment under the PTA.
