A curfew will be imposed if the need arises and it will be enforced strictly if violence erupts, Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles told journalists today (21).

"The Presidential election is calm and I appeal to the public and political party leaders to maintain this atmosphere. We have done our utmost to ensure the security of the nation during the Presidential election," Minister Alles said.

First election result expected by midnight

The first result of the 2024 Presidential election can be released by midnight today, Election Commissioner General Saman Sri Ratnayake said.

He told the media that the release of the first election result, whether from postal or polled votes, depends on the efficiency of the officers at the counting centres.

However, based on past experiences, the first result is likely to be announced by midnight today, he added.

Voting for the 2024 Presidential Elections began at 7.00 am in 13,421 polling stations across the island.
