Trade unions have strongly denounced the police crackdown on the protest by the National People’s Power against the postponement of the local government polls.

In a statement, these TUs who are members of the National Labour Advisory Council said the government has been using excessive police powers lately to curb public opposition.

At the same time, it is using the PTA to obtain court orders purportedly to protect public property.

It is a violation of fundamental human right to ban or repress opposition to the postponement of the election.

If the Ranil Wickremesinghe led government moves to curb the freedom of expression, that will destabilize the society and its promises of rebuilding the economy will be an empty one, the statement added.

A 46-year-old remains in critical condition after being teargassed at the anti-government protest on February 26.

Ajith Gamage of Kesbewa is being treated at the ICU of Colombo National Hospital.

Nimal Amarasiri of Nivitigala succumbed to the injuries he suffered during the police crackdown on the protest.

He was to be a NPP candidate for Nivitigala Pradeshiya Sabha at the LG polls.
