The Human Rights Commission (HRCSL) has recommended a more transparent and legitimate procedure for the registration of local news websites.

The HRCSL has asked the media ministry to submit a related report by February 28.

It made the recommendation after inquiring into a complaint lodged by medialk.com editor Tharindu Jayawardena, who alleged the media ministry had rejected his registration application on the grounds of having no defence ministry clearance.

The HRCSL recommendation said that involvement of state agencies only in the registration process was impractical.

According to anidda.lk, meetings to discuss the same involved officials from the Media Ministry, army, TRCSL and the ICTA only.
