President Ranil Wickremesinghe has ruled out dissolving parliament prematurely.
The matter was raised by SLPP’s Mahindananda Aluthgamage at a meeting of the government parliamentary group on October 17.
When he asked if parliament would be dissolved after 2 ½ years, President Wickremesinghe said that he would not oblige even if Aluthgamage went down on his knees and pleaded with him to do so.
The SLPP’s general secretary Sagara Kariyawasam said a majority of them opposed the 22nd amendment to the constitution.
According to Leader Gossip, the meeting became heated over the proposed amendment when justice minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe insisted he was done explaining matters.
With Sarath Weerasekara, Madura Withanage, Milan Jayatilake, S. Weerasinghe joining in with their objections, foreign minister Ali Sabri came to the rescue of his cabinet colleague and said the world community would question if the amendment was not introduced.
However, Vajira Abeywardena claimed there was no mention of the 22A either at the UNHRC in Geneva or in the IMF.
