The United States has issued an updated “Level 2: exercise increased caution” travel advisory for Sri Lanka ahead of the presidential polls.
It warns US citizens to exercise increased caution in Sri Lanka due to civil unrest and terrorism.
It says that Sri Lanka is set to hold presidential elections on September 21, 2024. Demonstrations could occur before, during, or after the election.
In some instances, police have used water cannons and tear gas to disperse protesters. US citizens are reminded to avoid all gatherings, even peaceful ones, as such gatherings can turn violent with little or no warning.
Terrorist attacks have occurred in Sri Lanka, with little or no warning, targeting tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets, shopping malls, government facilities, hotels, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, parks, major sporting and cultural events, educational institutions, airports, hospitals, and other public areas.
The US government has limited ability to provide emergency services to US citizens in remote areas.
Meanwhile, US ambassador Julie Chung expressed her eagerness to work closely with the president elected by the Sri Lankan people.
In a post on X, she highlighted the importance of ensuring a free and fair election, calling it a critical step for democracy in Sri Lanka.
