Sports minister Harin Fernando, together with his close confidantes Sanath Jayasuriya and Farveez Maharoof, had an unannounced meeting with the touring Sri Lanka under-19 team in Dubai on the night of 09 December.
Fernando was there for the final of the T10 tournament, after which he used a brief free time to meet the youngsters, before heading for home.
Players and the coaches, asked to wear their tour uniforms, were brought before the minister, who congratulated them and introduced Jayasuriya as their future official-in-charge.
The team is now in a dilemma if they should consult either Jayasuriya or consultant coach Mahela Jayawardena about their planning.
With his deep disappointment with the minister and his advisors, Jayawardena is expected to meet top Sri Lanka Cricket officials to discuss his future with the team.
