The Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC) has decided to pledge its support to President Ranil Wickramasinghe due to the programmes carried out by him within the last two years and his concern regarding the people of the upcountry.

CWC announced this decision yesterday (18) during a media conference held at the party headquarters in Hatton.

During the conference, CWC General Secretary and Minister of Water Supply and Estate Infrastructure Development Jeevan Thondaman stated, “The President has steered the country away from the state of bankruptcy. He has implemented numerous programmes in the last two years.

Additionally, he has taken measures to improve the livelihood, education, and health of the upcountry people. He has also shown great concern about the salary issue. The decision taken in the National Assembly was communicated to the President via telephone. The President mentioned that the people of the highlands stand by his side as strength.”

CWC President Senthil Thondaman added, “We held a democratic discussion on the upcoming Presidential Election. Most of the members expressed their decision to support President Ranil Wickremesinghe. We have based this decision on party leadership. The participants at the National Assembly also presented their demands. A Memorandum of Understanding will be signed with the President in this regard.”

Parliamentarian M. Rameshwaran stated, “We have decided to support Ranil Wickremesinghe in the Presidential Election. The President has taken steps to resolve the issue of wages for plantation workers, and we are grateful for this. Many projects will be carried out in the hills under the President’s rule in the next five years.”
