The SLPP is shaken by differing opinions with regard to its presidential candidate, reports lankadeepa.lk.
Some in the party want incumbent Ranil Wickremesinghe to be supported, while the others want a candidate of their own fielded.
The most immediate reason for the intensifying divisions is a proposal adopted by the SLPP’s Gampaha district politicians that Wickremesinghe should contest as the candidate.
This matter was brought up at a meeting at the Nelum Mawatha party headquarters chaired by its leader Mahinda Rajapaksa.
He replied that anyone has the freedom to adopt any proposal, but was confident that all would align with the party decision.
